My Molar Pregnancy

The Weeks Leading Up

Starting in January 2020, Jaden and I decided we were ready to start trying for our second baby. I had been tracking my periods and ovulation so I was certain I knew when the best time to try for a baby was so we went to work!

February came around, nothing. March, nothing. Finally, on April 4th, 2020, I had my first positive pregnancy test! I was SO excited and I immediately surprised Jaden by laying the test on his bedside table so that it was the first thing he saw when he woke up. The next day, we told my family and the day after that, we told Jaden’s. Everyone was very excited and what was even more exciting was that my sister-in-law was already a few months along with her second baby too so I was happy to have our babies so close in age again.

Not long after my positive test, I began spotting. This was the first sign, although we didn’t know it yet. At first, I wasn’t that worried because I spotted a little with Lexi…but it got heavier and never stopped. I began to worry and I brought it up to my doctor on April 17th, when I had my first appointment over video call. She seemed a little concerned but said that spotting can be normal in the first trimester but she wanted to set up an ultrasound to be safe.

Before my first US, I was freaking out. My spotting continued, off and on, and I prayed that everything was going to be okay. On April 21st, I went in for my first US. The tech asked how far along I was and I told her 8 weeks. She used a tranvaginal ultrasound and all she saw was the smallest sac but nothing inside. She asked if I was sure about my dates and I assured her I was. She then told me, with doubt in her face, that what she was seeing was not what you would expect to see at 8 weeks along. My doctor then decided to pull my blood to check my hCG levels (a hormone that detects pregnancy).

On April 22nd, I got a call saying my levels were at ~5000 which was normal for a 5-6 week pregnancy, my ultrasound also showed what you might see at 5-6 weeks. I met with my doctor and she said she thought that I ovulated late and asked if my husband and I had intercourse around what would be the start of my next period. We did, so she became pretty sure that was the case, although I told her countless times that I didn’t think that was right because I had religiously been tracking my ovulation but…I didn’t want to argue with her, I mean she is the doctor. At the end of that appointment, my blood was pulled again.

On April 27th, I was told that my levels were now at 9,000. This was good but my doctor wanted to continue pulling blood until my next US appointment which was scheduled for May 12th.

On April 28th, I went back to pull it once more and the next day I got a call saying that they were at 30,000! This was the second sign, but again…we didn’t know it yet. Although my levels skyrocketed, my doctor decided I didn’t need to pull anymore blood and told me just to wait for my US appointment.

The week leading up the appointment, things got progressively worse. I got SO sick. I was sick with my first pregnancy but this was so different. That was the third sign. I also just felt…off. I kept feeling like something wasn’t right. I prayed every single night for a sign that everything was okay but got nothing. I had one very scary nightmare that I had died during childbirth. I woke up the next day pondering that. Was God trying to tell me something? Something in me felt like He was telling me that this pregnancy couldn’t continue…for my life’s sake.

I want to say that I have always been very close in my relationship with our Heavenly Father. I had been through a very traumatizing experience in highschool with bullying and prayer is something that really helped me through it. Throughout my life, I could always feel His guidance and love and this time was no different. I could feel that I was being told that my intuition was correct even though I really hoped I was wrong.

On May 9th, I cancelled my US appointment because I was way too sick to go. I couldn’t get out of bed, I was vomiting and I just felt miserable. My spotting also got heavier, almost like a light period.

*WARNING* NEXT PART GETS A LITTLE GRAPHIC!

On May 12th, I miscarried. I had just eaten lunch and was on the phone with my mom when I just started pouring blood. I got off the phone with my mom and ran to the toilet. I passed what looked exactly like a gestational sac. I sat on the toilet and couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I had googled everything about miscarriage and even looked at images of what it looked like and this was it.

I walked out to Jaden who was sitting at his desk. He looked at me and in tears, all I could manage to get out was “it’s over”.

He held me while I cried. Lexi was taking a nap so I was thankful she didn’t have to witness any of that but we were both just heartbroken.

Being Diagnosed

Later that day, I called my doctor who told me to come in the next day and said I wouldn’t be seeing her and only a nurse. The office that I usually went to was also booked so I had to drive an extra 20 minutes to a different office, which was fine, I just wanted to get this over with.

On May 13th, I went in for my appointment. The nurse came in and examined me, just like if I was having a pap done. She said it looked like I had passed the sac and everything was passing fine so she said she didn’t think I needed medication or a D&C. Then she pulled up my chart…

She noticed my hCG levels were at 30,000 a couple weeks ago and asked about my symptoms. I told her I was incredibly sick. She asked if I had been spotting and I told her I had been spotting since finding out I was pregnant. All of a sudden, her face looked suspicious. She then said “you know what, I’m gonna have you get an ultrasound done as soon as possible just to take a look and make sure everything looks good inside”. She left the room and I overheard her tell another girl to tell the ultrasound tech to get me in at the next minute she could.

I went back out and waited in the waiting room. At this point, I was not that concerned, I just thought it was nice that she told me that everything looked good but wanted to just make sure.

In the ultrasound room, the tech took a ton of pictures. I could see the screen but had no idea what I was looking at. I examined her face every now and then but she never looked worried, so I didn’t worry. After she was done, she said she was going to go talk to the nurse to let her know how my ultrasound went.

While waiting, I broke down. It just hit me again that I lost a baby.

The tech came back in and said that a doctor wanted to see me. I was a little confused but thought…whatever.

A doctor came in, who wasn’t my regular doctor, but he seemed nice. He sat down and made a comment about how I have had a long day at this doctor’s office. He then got right to point and this is what he explained to me…

I had a molar pregnancy. In a molar pregnancy, at conception, genes do not code correctly and instead either double or do not accept the father’s genes. This causes a genetic deformity. From there, a sac is formed but a living baby is not present. The body still thinks that it is a viable pregnancy and begins pushing tissue into the uterus creating cysts all over the uterus. On an ultrasound, this looks like I swallowed a ton of grapes and those grapes are having little grape babies and they are just partying inside my uterus. The concerning part of this type of pregnancy is that the cysts can possibly be cancerous. If that is the case, I will need chemotherapy and might never be able to conceive again. The problem is, there is not enough research to know whether or not the tissue is cancerous or not. The only way they have found to tell is if the body continues to produce hCG and pushes tissue into the uterus even after a D&C surgery (a surgery that involves scraping and removing all contents of the uterus).

Also, guess what the early signs are for molar pregnancy?

  1. High hCG levels, that skyrocket in short periods of time
  2. Spotting/Bleeding for a long duration in the first trimester
  3. Severe nausea/vomiting

And I had all three…

He told me that I would need a D&C as soon as possible to scrape my uterus of all of the tissue, he would then send it into the lab to be tested to confirm it was a molar pregnancy. He also told me this was VERY rare. When it does happen, it tends to happen to women under 20 and over 35 who have never been pregnant before. I am 25 and had a perfectly healthy pregnancy before so he said my case was even rarer.

He also said they don’t know why this happens but he is hopeful for me. Since I had a perfectly healthy baby once before, my body should hopefully be able to figure that out again one day. But he said we have to do all this hard stuff first and get me healthy again before we could even talk about that.

After that appointment, I got in the car and immediately called Jaden. I cried hysterically. I then called my mom. I went into my appointment expecting to hear “Yes, you miscarried but in another month or two, you can try again” and instead I got “You never carried a living baby but you still need surgery to clean out your uterus…oh and you may have cancer”.

When I was on the phone with my mom, she told me to ask Jaden if he could ask his family to give me a blessing. My mom is a firm believer in blessings. I called Jaden back who was at his parent’s house at the time and asked him if he could have his family give me a blessing. For those that don’t know, Jaden’s family are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and my mom was raised in the church which is why she knew about blessings and strongly believes in them.

I won’t get too religious here because I do not want to make anyone uncomfortable so I will be short. During my blessing, I felt so safe. I felt peace. I felt like everything was going to be okay and that no matter what, I was going to be taken care of.

On May 15th, I had my D&C surgery. Due to Covid, Jaden was not allowed in the hospital with me which was TERRIFYING. I had never gotten surgery before so I was scared to death and couldn’t even have my husband there to comfort me. I was there for about 4 hours. Most of it was just waiting for the actual surgery. We checked in at 10, and they finally took me back about 12:45. All I remember was the anesthesiologist saying “I had to cut your dose in half because you’re so tiny!” and I was out. All I remember next was waking up in the recovery room, drowsy and so out of it! The nurse came to me and said “Hey Nissa, you’re at the hospital, you just got out of surgery and you are a little woozy because of the anesthesia”. He walked over to call Jaden and we left the hospital at about 2:30. It would have been earlier but it took me about an hour to wake up from the anesthesia.

From there, recovery went well. That night, I already felt normal. I had light bleeding, which was normal and hardly any pain. Any pain I did have was relieved by some good ‘ol Advil.

On May 22nd, I had my follow-up appointment with the doctor. The same doctor that diagnosed me also performed my surgery and I have also switched from my original primary doctor to him. He said before surgery my hCG levels were at +299,000 which was REALLY high and after surgery, they were at ~6,500, which was great. He told me I had been recovering well and that he was super proud of me. My pathology results came back confirming that I had a complete molar pregnancy, which was not surprising.

WHERE ARE WE NOW

The game plan is that I have to get my blood drawn every week to monitor my hCG levels and make sure they are decreasing. So far my tests have been…

Week 1 Post Surgery: ~6500

Week 2: ~1200

Week 3: ~370

Today is June 8th, and I just got the call about my week 3 results. Once they reach 0, I have to go in monthly to draw my blood to make sure they stay at 0. If all looks good then my doctor will give us the go on trying to conceive again.

As of now, it is crucial that I do not get pregnant while my blood is being tested. This is because it will be hard to tell if my hCG levels are rising because of pregnancy or if it is because the cysts have returned. Remember, if my levels rise, that is a good indication that they are cancerous and I will have to undergo chemotherapy but on the positive side, my doctor says my levels are decreasing nicely and as of now, he is not concerned therefore we shouldn’t be either.

Wrapping this up, here is what I have to say…

I am so…confused. Miscarriage is heartbreaking enough but this wasn’t a normal miscarriage. If it was, I could be pregnant or trying to get pregnant right now but I can’t. I am so angry with my body because I just don’t understand how my first pregnancy went perfectly. No complications, no worries, I had a perfectly healthy, beautiful baby…so why couldn’t it figure it out a second time?

The worst part is seeing other pregnant women. As I mentioned earlier, my sister in law is pregnant with my second gorgeous niece and I am very excited. I pray for her every night that her and baby girl are healthy. But it still rips me apart inside to know that I can’t experience that. I would give anything to be in her position. I would give anything to feel those sweet baby kicks, to hear that galloping heartbeat, and to watch my belly grow every day. I look back at when I had Lexi and how perfect that day was. I would give anything to have that moment again.

We are all getting through this. My family and I. But still, I break down every now and then. Why did this have to happen to me? Is God punishing me? What did I do wrong?? I get the same answers…it could happen to anyone, I am not being punished, and there was nothing I could have done to prevent it. It just happens

I am a firm believer in everything happening for a reason. So I try to remind myself that even though I don’t fully understand it right now, a time will come when I will. Maybe this is just not the right time, there is a different plan for us. I know God isn’t punishing me. He wouldn’t do that. Instead, I believe He has other plans for us. Better plans. I trust Him.

All we can do right now is try to remain positive. Take it a day at a time.

I am hopeful.

I will continue to update on here simply for myself and others who are curious or might be going through something similar. This is by far the hardest thing I have ever had to go through in my life and I wouldn’t wish it upon my worst enemy.

If I can get anything out of this experience, it would be to do my part to raise awareness about this horrible diagnosis and to help others that might be dealing with the same thing. I feel totally alone in this but by posting this and talking about it, I am hoping that those who also had a molar pregnancy that stumble upon this post don’t have to feel that way.

Current Favorite Amazon Products (4/24/2020)

Happy Friday!

I have shared so many of my favorite Amazon products this past month on my Instagram Stories so I had to write up an updated post for you guys.

Let’s get to it…

(Click the title of each picture and it will take you to the Amazon page for that product)

BISSEL STEAM MOP

When we moved into our new house, we were told not to use ANY product or chemicals on our floors and to purchase a steam mop instead. We thought that was odd at first because we have never used a steam mop on our floors before but we followed directions and looked into steam mops. We found this one and we LOVE it. We recommend it to everyone!

The funny thing is, months later, I see ALL of the Instagram Influencers post about it now and it makes me giddy that I found it awhile back and now everyone loves it as much as I do.

It comes with two mop pads and a few scent discs but they also have separate listings if you need to order more mop pads or scent discs.

FOLEX INSTANT CARPET STAIN REMOVER

This stuff is MAGICAL for sure. I have a lot of lighter colored furniture in our house. Everything is pretty much white or light grey and with a toddler…that can be scary. But thanks to Folex, we don’t panic about stains in this house.

Our furniture get’s covered in lollipop stains, chocolate milk stains, and many foreign/unknown stains…but Folex takes them out every time. We use this on our couch, rugs, carpet and any other upholstery that Lexi might get her dirty little fingers on.

This listing is for a two pack but they do have a listing for just one as well if you just want to try it out! But I promise you’ll love it!

SIMPLE MODERN DISNEY TUMBLER CUP

Lexi’s cup journey has been a long one…for a long time we have been using the Munchkin 360 cups, which we like, but they are a PAIN to clean and maybe it’s just us…but they stain SO easily and it drives me nuts!

Lexi has always liked drinking from a straw more than anything else but we can’t give her a regular tumbler with a straw unless we don’t mind having juice and water all over our floors (my poor bissel steam mop would be overworked!).

One of my favorite Instagram Influencers (Daryl-Ann Denner) recommended these tumblers because they are small, easy to clean AND they don’t leak! They were a tad pricy to me but my mom bought her one for Easter and we are obsessed! We want to get her more for her birthday in July.

The straw is silicone and the hole that the straw goes through is also silicone with is what makes it leak-proof. It’s awesome and I LOVE that they are easy to clean. It’s also Lexi’s new favorite cup!

CARE CHECK CLEANING WIPES

Okay, I am so BUMMED that these are sold out right now so I apologize, but I still wanted to put them on here in case they do come back in stock soon!

We have been using these wipes since before the virus outbreak and they are the best! We use them to clean all of our little things like glasses and phones.

I love that they come with so many and they are easy to put in a little baggy and put them in your car or purse when you need them if you’re out and about.

LEXI’S BUBBLE MACHINE

Ugh! So this is sold out too…

I swear it was just in stock like yesterday!

This is here per Lexi’s request…she is a total bubble princess! We have went through many bubble machines unfortunately because they just all suck to be honest and break so easily. BUT this one has been going strong for us!

COSRX ACNE PIMPLE MASTER PATCHES

I have very oily skin and I breakout VERY easily. My sister has the same problem and she recommended these bad boys and let me have a pack to try and I LOVE them!

They work like magic! You basically pop your zit and clean it up, then put a patch over it and leave it like that over night. It helps get rid of them and avoid scarring.

Recipe: Sweet Beef

Okay, I know those paragraphs before the actual recipe can be pretty annoying so I promise I will keep it short and sweet!

Since I know we are all social-distancing right now, I decided to take this as the perfect opportunity to share my family’s favorite recipes in hopes to give you guys some easy dinner ideas at home.

I highly recommend following my Instagram page so you always see when I post a new recipe because sometimes it takes me awhile to get them all typed up on here! You can follow me here.

Above are the pictures of my recipe cards and feel free to copy that down or save the picture for yourself.

Below, I will post some more in depth pictures of the recipe in case you’re like me and like having more visuals!

I start with tossing the meat into the crockpot and then sprinkling the brown sugar over it.

Next, I put the sauce over the top.

This is the sauce that we used this night but it is not the sauce we normally use. We prefer this one..

But since the virus and people clearing out the shelves, we had to settle with the other one since it was the last one left.

Lastly, throw in all of the seasonings and spices!

Turn the crock pot on and cook on low for 8 hours. At around 5-6 hours, I will go in and shred the meat too.

Serve it over rice and wah-lah! This is the final product! SO good!!

Tips For Keeping Your House Tidy

Before my husband and before having a baby, I was very tidy. I get it from my mama. My mom is very clean and her house is always spotless. Even when we were younger!

She is that person where you go over to her house and see that it is SPOTLESS and she still says “omg sorry my house is such a mess!” and then you look at her like she’s crazy.

Yep, that’s my mom.

Now that I am married and have a have a toddler running around, it has been harder and harder to keep my house clean. Before we moved into our house, we lived in a tiny apartment and I felt like it was always messy! No matter what I did. I was SO STRESSED OUT. I constantly called my mom crying because I couldn’t figure out what to do. But she kept telling me “you’ll figure it out, you’ll find your groove”. Once we moved into our house, I told myself, I need to make some good cleaning habits and figure something out and I DID.

So, now I want to share some tips with you guys that I find SO helpful. Especially when you have a messy hubby and a toddler that basically follows you around and destroys everything that you just cleaned!

ONCE THE KIDS ARE IN BED, TAKE 15-30 MINUTES TO STRAIGHTEN UP

Ahh…the babies are down and you can finally relax. But before you turn on Netflix, take some time to straighten up.

Depending on the severity of the clutter, I give myself somewhere between 15-30 minutes a night to straighten up the house. I start with one room and just work my way around the house.

Once the time is up, you’ll feel so much better when you sit down on your couch to stream some shows knowing your house is tidy again. It’s also nice because the kids are in bed which means your house get’s to stay tidy for longer than 5 minutes! Yay!

TAG TEAM DISHES WITH YOUR PARTNER RIGHT AFTER DINNER

Jaden and I used to fight about doing dishes because it’s both of our least favorite chore. We both cook and for awhile, we had a deal where if you cooked, then the other person does dishes.

But a lot of the time, I ended up still doing the dishes because Jaden wanted to “wait until morning” to do them and that didn’t fly with me.

So we came up with a new deal. We would BOTH do dishes. No matter who cooked, we would tag team them. It get’s done so much quicker and we don’t get mad at each other!

Also, do your dishes right after dinner! DO NOT wait until morning. You’ll always regret it.

INVEST IN A CORDLESS VACUUM

Dyson v8 Animal Cord-Free Vacuum

One thing we splurged on after moving into our house was a Dyson Cordless Vacuum. It is by far the best thing we have ever purchased!

I would marry this vacuum you guys.

I’m serious.

We use it CONSTANTLY and the smaller attachment is a life saver when it comes to cleaning the high chair, couches or the inside of our cars.

I know they are pricy but SO WORTH IT.

LAUNDRY BASKETS AREN’T JUST FOR LAUNDRY

I found this little hack not too long ago. So when I do my 15-30 minutes of tidying up at night, I carry a laundry basket with me room-to-room.

As I am cleaning, if I find anything that doesn’t belong in the room, I put it in the laundry basket. Then I will take it to the next room and do the same thing. At the end, I will go through the basket and put everything away, or as I am going to room-to-room, if there is anything in there that goes in that room, I will put it away right then.

It’s a simple hack that makes life so much easier.

MAKE A TO-DO LIST

I am a person that loves lists. I make one for everything.

Something about crossing something off makes me so happy.

It is actually proven that crossing things off a list, does in fact, please your brain! Trust me, I have a degree in Psychology.

So make a list of everything you want to get done and give yourself a time frame. I make mine on Sunday and then give myself the week to cross it all off. Just doing a few things a day and crossing them off your list will definitely give you peace of mind.

KEEP DECOR TO A MINIMUM

Okay, I know this one sounds weird but let me explain. I found that having minimal decor makes a home look much tidier. It can be easy to get carried away with all of the cute home decor but let’s face it, your home isn’t always going to look like your favorite home decor Instagrammer’s all the time. Especially when you have kids.

It just makes life easier not having so much “stuff” to worry about and clean all the time.

TWO WORDS: STORAGE BASKETS

My last tip comes from when I binge watched Marie Kondo while we were living in the apartment. Something she always pushed was having little storage baskets to help keep drawers and cabinets organized.

I went out and bought a bunch of storage baskets in all kinds of sizes and it has changed my life. I really don’t know what it is about them but they make me feel like even my junk drawer is more organized.

It also makes me feel better knowing everything has a particular bin that it belongs in and helps a lot when tidying up the house.

So never pass up a good storage bin sale from Target or Walmart. You will ALWAYS find a place for them and things to put in them.

Friday Favorites: Holiday Treats

Happy Friday everyone!

It is officially baking season and my mouth has been watering seeing all of the delicious sweets that everyone is making.

So for today’s post, I want to share a few of my favorite holiday treats with you all.

ANDES MINT COOKIES

I don’t know about you but I LOVE Andes Mints! They are one of my favorite candies. So I was thrilled when I saw this recipe!

This recipe is SUPER easy and requires only 4 ingredients so it is a breeze to make.

You can find the recipe here.

SUGAR COOKIES

Doesn’t everyone make sugar cookies for the holidays?

This recipe seems to be a hit and I am dying to try it. I have heard so many great things about it and I wanted to share it on here with all of you!

This recipe is by Rachel Parcell from her blog Pink Peonies, it is for Valentines Day Cookies but you can obviously use this recipe any time of the year.

You can find the recipe here.

PEANUT BUTTER KISS COOKIES

This is probably my favorite cookie of the bunch because it is so simple and tastes so good!

I’ll admit, I just buy the packaged peanut butter cookie mix and drop a Hershey’s kiss on top but if you like to experiment and make your own mix, you can find a good recipe here.

GRINCH COOKIES

I made these cookies one year and they were an absolute hit!

I totally forgot about them and I am dying to make them again but they were so much and pretty easy.

They also require Andes Mints too!

You can find the recipe here.

CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER RITZ CRACKER COOKIES

My mom makes these every year and they are one of the family’s favorites! They are super addicting.

The recipe tells you to use your own peanut butter and spread them onto the crackers yourself but this year, my mom just bought the Ritz Peanut Butter Crackers that were already made and then just dipped them into the chocolate and they taste just the same so it’s up to you!

You can find the recipe here.

Men’s Gift Guide 2019

Happy Monday!

Today, I want to give everyone some gift ideas for those special men in our lives. If the men in your life are anything like the men in mine…they are SO DIFFICULT to shop for! Jaden is a gamer so everything he wants is usually pretty expensive and my dad never wants anything so it makes it really difficult!

Luckily, I have compiled a pretty good list of things for both of them this year and I am pretty happy about it.

A. BLEU de CHANEL Cologne by Chanel 3.4 fl oz, $120 from Sephora – This is my favorite cologne ever! It smells amazing and Jaden loves it just as much as me. I usually buy him a new cologne every other year but he always likes this one or the other one on this list.

B. Bath & Body Men’s Collection – The scent I have pictured above is the one that I bought for Jaden this year because it smells so good but honestly, I like all of the scents in Bath & Body’s men’s collection. We like our men to smell good, ya know? I also bought some for my dad because he is all about smelling good and plus, he asked for lotion this year since he is always taking my moms but all of her stuff smells “girly”.

C. The Minimalist Slim Three-Hand Black Stainless Steel Watch, $139 from Fossil – This is actually what I bought for Jaden this year! Don’t worry, he already knows because he’s a nosy little butt. I did not do a very good job about hiding it so he found the box and had to try it on. On the bright side, he LOVES it! He has been wanting a watch for awhile now and what made it even more special is that I had it engraved to say “THIS IS THE WAY Love N + L”. He is a big Star Wars fan and we have been watching The Mandalorian together so I knew he would love that personal touch!

D. Crew Socks 3-Pack, $34 from Abercrombie & Fitch – Here is neat little stocking stuffer idea that he might not love but he may very well need. Jaden tells me all the time “I don’t new clothes, my socks are fine with holes in them…blah blah blah” but I still get him clothes and new socks because I don’t know what this man does to wear them out so fast but it’s crazy!

E. All Black Classic Aviator Sunglasses, $153 from Ray-Bans – Jaden loves sunglasses and like me, he sticks with aviators. These all black aviators match all of the other all-black things that Jaden owns so they are perfect! Honestly, I need to get me a pair too because I am dying to have these.

F. 32 oz Hydro Flask Water Bottle with Wide Mouth Lid, $44 from Hydro Flask or Dicks – I think these are the perfect gift for any man in your life, especially if you just have NO idea what to get! They are reasonably priced and you know they will get some use out of them! You really can’t go wrong with this one.

G. Victoria’s Secret Very Sexy Platinum For Him Cologne, $78 from Victoria’s Secret – I have two colognes are here simply because I like variety in scent and men (at least the one’s in my life) are very picky about scent! Jaden doesn’t like a lot of colognes and it is so hard to find one he will wear and like. This one and the Chanel are really the only two he has ever liked so he likes to switch off between them! Plus, Victoria’s Secret usually does great deals on perfumes and colognes, especially around the holidays, so keep an eye out!

I hope you found this gift guide helpful! Happy Shopping!

Etiquette Tips Everyone Should Know

Hello everyone!

Today’s post is going to be a little different from my usual content but it is something that I have been thinking about a lot lately.

Now that we have reached that time of the year where everyone is giving gifts, having parties and getting married, it is important to remember proper etiquette.

Growing up, my mom taught my sisters and I how to have good manners and be kind. She was always a great example and we still look up to her today.

So here are some of my favorite etiquette tips that everyone should practice…

ALWAYS Say Thank You

This is probably one of the most important rules and should always, always, ALWAYS be practiced! A simple, but meaningful, “thank you” can go a long way with a person. It shows that you appreciate someone’s thought or help.

I know this rule may seem obvious to some but you would be surprised at how many people out there forget and need to be reminded.

If anyone ever does anything for you, whether you asked them to or not, always show your appreciation by saying thank you. I promise, it will only look good in the other persons eyes.

Thank You Notes Will NEVER Go Out Of Style

Now that we are in the age of social media and texting, Thank You Notes seem very “old fashioned”. Personally, I LOVE thank you notes! I think it means a lot more when someone takes the time to write out a personal thank you to someone else.

Don’t get me wrong, texting is much easier and you don’t have to pay for postage.

But, I still write thank you notes for certain events. When I had my wedding, bridal shower and baby shower, I made sure to send out thank you notes to everyone who showed up or gave us a gift/card.

I also make sure to write out thank you notes to those who really enjoy them. For example, my husband’s Filipino grandma, who we call “Lola” is very old-fashioned (and the sweetest little woman ever) and she doesn’t like to use her phone very much. She always goes out of her way to send Jaden, Lexi and I gifts or cards so whenever she does, I make sure to send her a thank you note.

This simple act goes the extra mile to show someone that you appreciate them and what they do for you. So invest in some cute thank you notes!

Put Your Phone Down!

We depend on our phones so much nowadays. Most of us cannot go 30 minutes without checking our phone and if it’s further than 10 feet away, we go nuts.

I mean, chances are, you are reading this on your phone!

The thing to remember with phones is that there is always a right time and very wrong times to be on your phone.

One common wrong time that people seem to forget is when you are spending time with family.

When you are surrounded by family, try your best not to use your phone. Instead, engage with your other family members. Talk to your siblings, cousins, parents, grandparents…anyone around! Be in the moment.

You will never get this time back so use it wisely, especially when it comes to family. Your parents are getting older and everyone is growing up and their lives are changing. Cherish these times and leave your phone in your bag or pocket.

Offer Help When You Can

If you see someone struggling, offer to help when you can and show up when you do. Offer to bring some soup for someone who may be sick. Offer to provide dinner to the new parents who just welcomed their new baby into the world. Or even offer to provide some company to someone who may seem unlike themselves lately.

Life gets crazy all of the time and everyone has their hard days, so it’s good to help a person when you can. Who knows, maybe if you’re the one having the hard day, someone will return the favor!

Watch Your Cursing

This is something even I have to remind myself sometimes!

Often times, people say “they are just words” and while that is true, words can also carry heavy meaning behind them.

In our world today, cursing has become the “cool” thing to do. I can’t even walk through a store without hearing young teenagers using curse words in their general conversations.

Jaden and I both curse, although we try our best not to, especially around our daughter. If we do, we are quick to remind each other to be careful about the language we are using.

I obviously won’t sit here and tell you “don’t ever say curse words ever ever ever!” but know your surroundings and when it is definitely not appropriate. For example, around children, elders and large groups where you don’t know if that kind of language will offend someone or not. Be mindful.

Also, I have read that studies have shown that too much cursing makes people uncomfortable and shows a lack of intelligence. Not to say that people who curse are not smart. It just comes off that way.

So try not to do it. In all honesty, they are just unnecessary words.

If You Are Invited To A Wedding, Always Send a Card/Gift

If someone invites your to their special day, it’s a big deal. This person is inviting you to spend a very important and special day with them.

Whether you are able to attend or not, make sure to send a gift or card to the couple. Weddings, in general, are very pricy and most times, the family doesn’t get back what they paid for.

So show your support by providing a gift or at the very least, a card.

If You Are Invited to a Dinner/Other Event, Bring a Treat

This is something that I would really like to work on!

I always found it thoughtful when people would bring a dessert or other treat to a special dinner or event they were invited to.

I know a lot of people like to bring a bottle of wine, but you can also bring a pie, cookies, or any other little side as a little “thank you for inviting us”.

Master the “Small Talk”

This is something I have had to learn over the years! I have always been a pretty social person so I have never struggled with being surrounded by strangers and worrying about what to say or do. Although, I can be shy, but I try to avoid being on my phone or sitting on the sidelines.

As embarrassing as it is to admit, I spend A LOT of time on social media. I love seeing what other people are doing and getting a glimpse into their lives. I am also super nosy! But I use this to my advantage when talking to people in person.

If I saw that someone went to a concert or bought a new car or even bought new pillows for their couch, I will talk to them about it! It makes people feel good to know that you noticed or care about what is going on in their lives.

Something I learned in my years of studying Psychology, is that people LOVE talking about themselves. Not in a selfish way, really, it’s just that they are experts about their own lives so it comes natural! When you take an interest in someone else’s life, it makes you more likable in return because you come off as easy to talk to and caring.

Typically, it will prompt the other person to ask about your life as well so you also get your time to shine.

If you are meeting someone for the first time, this is the perfect opportunity to get to know them and for them to get to know you. Just always remember not to talk too much about yourself and always ask questions! It makes you seem more interested and give the other person a chance to elaborate more.

Hopefully you found this post helpful, especially in time for the holidays!

Wedding Series: My Bridal Makeup

Happy Wednesday everyone!

Today, I am continuing our wedding series and I want to talk about MAKEUP! Specifically, mine. My bridesmaids did their own makeup, as did I, but I wasn’t picky at all about their makeup. Mine however, I took months deciding what tutorial to follow and what products to buy but I am very happy with how it turned out!

Since I had a bohemian styled wedding, I kept my makeup fairly simple. I did not want to go all out with the glam.

So let’s jump into it! To start, here is the exact tutorial that I followed and then I will talk about the products. I used most of the same products Bella used and then a few of my own.

BENEFIT PRECISELY MY BROW ULTRA FINE SHAPE & DEFINE – $24 at Sephora

To start, I used my favorite brow pencil in the world! I just filled in my brows as I normally do and set it with the…

ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS CLEAR BROW GEL – $22 at Sephora

TARTE TARTLETTE IN BLOOM CLAY EYESHADOW PALETTE – $39 at Sephora

I did not use an eyeshadow primer. Instead, I did what Bella did in the video and I applied concealer to my eyelid and then set it with a setting powder, both of these products, I mention below.

As for eyeshadow, I used my Tarte In Bloom palette for my crease in the shades “Smarty Pants” and “Jetsetter”.

I also used “Smokeshow” to draw my wing.

URBAN DECAY NAKED 3 PALETTE – $54 at Sephora

Like Bella did, I used “Dust” for the main part of my eyelid and for me, it was intense enough so I was happy with it! She added another shimmery shadow on top of it to intensify it but it’s all up to you!

LAURA MERCIER FOUNDATION PRIMER – RADIANCE $38 at Sephora

I used this primer and I swear by this primer! There is a bit of a sheen to it, which I like, because it adds a glowiness to your foundation that makes it look more natural! I have oily to normal skin and this primer works wonders for me. I still use it to this day!

WET N WILD PHOTO FOCUS FOUNDATION $6.49 at Ulta

Bella used Milani’s foundation which I have yet to try, but I decided to use my Wet N Wild Photo Focus foundation for my wedding day because this foundation does amazing with pictures! Every time we take family pictures or anything, I ALWAYS use this foundation because it shows up the best in photos! This foundation is definitely a holy grail for me and the best part about it, it’s so cheap.

Also, as Bella did, I used a Beauty Blender to blend my foundation and concealer.

*DIFFERENT OPTION* TARTE DOUBLE DUTY BEAUTY SHAPE TAPE CONCEALER – $27 at Ulta

For my concealer, I did use the same concealer as Bella which was the Urban Decay Naked Skin concealer BUT I just found out, they don’t sell it anymore!

So I will just tell you guys about my current favorite concealer and that is the infamous Tarte Shape Tape concealer! I am sure you have heard of it because it is most people’s favorite right now!

IT COSMETICS BYE BYE PORES PORELESS FINISH AIRBRUSH POWDER – $29 at Sephora

So Bella bakes her undereye area with the Laura Mercier finishing powder which I do love but lately I have been all about the It Cosmetics finishing powder. This is what Bella uses all over her face while mixing it with a highlight, which I will talk about next.

I baked my undereyes with the It Cosmetics powder and also used it all over my face while mixing it with a tad of highlight.

TARTE TARTIEST PRO GLOW HIGHLIGHT AND CONTOUR PALETTE – $45 at Sephora

For MY highlight, I took from my favorite highlight palette ever!! I LOVE this palette so much, it is by far one of my favorites!

The highlight that I mixed with my finishing powder was the shade “Lit” since that was closer to my actual skin color.

I also used the “Sculpt” shade in this palette as my bronzer and just applied that under my cheekbones, around my jawline and to contour my nose.

NARS BLUSH – ORGASM $30 at Sephora

Bella used the Nars shade “Luster” but I personally did not like this shade. It was hardly noticeable on my face so instead, I used my favorite Nars blush shade, Orgasm! I know the name is woah but the shade is honestly amazing! The perfect pink in my opinion.

URBAN DECAY ALL NIGHTER LONG-LASTING MAKEUP SETTING SPRAY – $33 at Sephora

Finally, I set everything with this amazing setting spray! My makeup stayed on perfectly throughout my entire wedding day and I am so happy with it!

Also, you might be wondering about my lashes since I never mentioned any lash products! I actually got my lashes done before my wedding, so I did not need falsies or mascara.

And that is it! As I said, I ultimately followed Bella’s tutorial and used many of the same products she used and also a few of my own. Mostly because I did not want to spend too much money on makeup and wanted to use mainly what I had. Luckily, I already owned many of these!

My Top 8 Moving Tips

Hello everyone! One week from today, we will be settled into our new house and we can’t wait!

A new little thing you will learn about me this week is that I HATE packing. When we moved out of our apartment, I was STILL packing on the day that we moved. I don’t know what it is, I just…hate it? Normally, I am pretty organized and I hardly procrastinate but when it comes to packing up my place, I just don’t even care.

When we moved out of the apartment and into my parents, we knew that most of our stuff would have to go into storage so I wanted to make sure I could keep everything organized and safe while we waited for our house to be built. I looked for any tips I could to help me and now I want to share all of my favorites with you!

USE COLORFUL TAPE TO LABEL BOXES

We will start with my favorite tip! So when we moved out of the apartment, we had to make sure we knew which boxes were going into storage and which ones were going into my parents house.

My labels went like this:

Yellow – Kitchen (Storage)

Blue – Bathrooms/Bedroom (Storage)

Pink- Bathrooms/Bedrooms (Parents House)

Green – Other (Parents House)

This made it easier for my movers too so I could just tell them Yellow/Blue goes into storage and Pink/Green goes into the house.

I also took sharpies and wrote on the tape exactly what room the contents of the box were in and under the tape I wrote what was in them.

SHRINK WRAP WILL BE YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND

One of my friends from high school gave me this helpful tip and it helped so much! She told me to wrap my utensils in the kitchen like silverware and other cooking utensils. I love this because it keeps everything together and makes it so much easier when fitting everything in boxes.

If you’re like me, you keep your silverware and other utensils in little drawer organizers so what I did was just keep everything in the organizer and wrap the organizer so nothing would fall out. Then, I would just stick it in the box! It was so quick and easy and it made me shrink wrap so many other things in my apartment. Even things that probably didn’t need to be wrapped but I was like “SHRINK WRAP IT ALL”.

ASK STORES FOR BOXES INSTEAD OF BUYING THEM

Since I worked at Target and Victoria’s Secret and still had connections at both stores, I was able to get some boxes from there so that we didn’t have to pay for any! The Victoria’s Secret boxes were our favorite because they were nice and big and sturdy and they gave me quite a bit! Target gave me different sizes so that was nice when we wanted to keep certain things in their own box instead of mixing things.

If you did not work at places like Target and VS, you can still call places like Target or Wal-Mart and ask to speak to a manager and see if they will hold boxes for you. When I worked at Target, we did it all the time for people so it was no problem at all!

LIST EVERYTHING YOU CAN WHEN LABELING BOXES

So this one comes from my mom and honestly, I thought she was a little crazy until we had to dig through our storage boxes a couple times to pull out things we ended up needing.

Her and my grandma like to list on the boxes what is inside and they list pretty much EVERYTHING in the box. It is SO helpful in case you have to dig back through them later.

It’s also just nice to know what is inside in case certain things may be fragile and movers need to be extra careful with those ones.

WHATEVER IT IS…JUST THROW IT IN A BOX

When we moved from my parents to our apartment, I had a lot of help from family so honestly, everything was packed very nicely and moving was a breeze. When we moved from the apartment back to my moms, I had help from my mom but a lot of it, I did on my own and it definitely showed on moving day…

There was so much that I said “It doesn’t need to be in a box, I’ll just throw it in the car on moving day” and BOY WAS THAT STUPID.

We had so many miscellaneous things that it was such a pain! I really wish I would have just thrown things in boxes instead of carrying so many things individually.

You better believe that this time around, anything that can go in a box…WILL be put in a box!

TAKE ALL THE HELP YOU CAN GET

One thing I love about Jaden’s family is that they are amazing helpers when it comes to moving! My mom and sisters helped me pack up our apartment while Jaden’s family helped us move it into my parents. My mom also watched Lexi while we were moving so that was nice.

While we do rent a Uhaul, my Father In Law owns a truck so it is SO nice to have both of those to load boxes and furniture. I am ALL about taking the least amount of trips back and forth as possible! Jaden also has a bigger family than I do so having all the extra hands makes it so much faster and easier to move!

So if people offer to help move, let them! Also, if they offer to bring food on moving day, also let them! It is so nice not to have to worry about food on that day too.

DON’T WANT TO BUY CLOTHES BOXES? JUST GET SOME ROPE!

I tried to find a picture of this but I couldn’t find one and now I am regretting not taking a picture of my car when I did this..

Clothes boxes are expensive and I really didn’t want to pay for them. I also didn’t really want to just “throw” my clothes in the car because then hangers get everywhere, clothes fall off hangers and it’s just a mess.

I found this tip that said to get some rope and tie it between the two handles in the back seat of your car. I honestly do not know any other way to describe the handles I am talking about other than the “Oh S*** Handles” in the back of the car. So yeah, those ones.

Make sure the rope is tight and just hang your clothes on there! Simple as that.

JUST BUY THE BUBBLE WRAP AND PACKING PAPER

I know a lot of people try to get by without the bubble wrap and packing paper and if you are not about that paper/bubble wrap life, I won’t try to change you.

BUT it saved my life. Where I work now, we always have a ton of bubble wrap on hand so I asked my bosses if I could buy some bubble wrap from them and they let me have a giant roll which was AWESOME! I bubble wrapped everything.

It gave me peace of mind knowing all of my stuff was safe and since I am a master bubble wrapper now, I am confident that most (if not ALL) of our things will survive the move!

TIME FOR A BIG TRIP TO GOODWILL…OR FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE

For our last tip, this is my least favorite because it is time consuming but also the tip that I am SO HAPPY I followed after moving was all over!

I found that the best way to pack everything up was by making sure our apartment was cleaned and organized BEFORE I began packing.

So I went through everything a week or two before packing. I went through our closets and pulled out all of the clothes we didn’t wear anymore, went through decor and put aside everything I did not want anymore, etc. We made special boxes that were “donation” boxes that we had taken to Goodwill when we moved.

For things that you could get money for, like furniture, you can always put it up on Facebook Marketplace to see if you can get some money back! We did this with our couch and then put that money toward our new couch.

Once you get rid of all of the “junk”, it makes it SO much easier to pack up later!

If you are planning to move any time soon, I hope you found these tips helpful or keep them in mind! They definitely saved me!

We have a very busy schedule these next two weeks, starting tomorrow! We will be doing our final walkthrough for our house and signing closing papers at the end of the week and then finally moving in next week! I will TRY to get a post up next Tuesday so I am hoping to get it all typed out before then so I can have it scheduled to automatically post next week while we are moving. It might be our final chapter for our “Building Our House” series or another wedding series post, but we’ll see!

Also, be sure to follow my Instagram, click here to follow me, because I plan on doing an “Empty House Tour” before we start moving all of our boxes and stuff in so you will definitely want to check that out!

Tips for Decorating on a Budget

Happy Tuesday everyone! Something I was asked A LOT when we were living in the apartment was how I decorated it so cute while being on a budget. Obviously, since Jaden and I were just starting out AND getting pregnant so soon, we did not have all the money in the world so budgeting was important for us. However, I still wanted to decorate our little apartment and make it feel more at home.

When we first moved in, I HATED it. It was so noisy, we had horrible neighbors and the apartment itself wasn’t in the best shape. I tried to be humble and most of the time, I was fine, but being pregnant and dealing with everything was super stressful for me so it was important that I make our apartment as comfortable for us as possible.

I have to point out, my parents were a HUGE help when furnishing our apartment. My parents bought our dining table (from At Home) and they helped pay for half of our couch (from Living Space). This past Christmas, my parents gifted us with our coffee table because before, we were using the cheap little 4-foot foldable table and my mom couldn’t stand it! So I do have to give them some credit there but even though they did gift us with stuff, Jaden and I still had them buy our stuff from stores that were running deals and wouldn’t be crazy expensive!

Alright, now let’s get into it! Here are some tips on how to decorate on a budget:

1. ALWAYS look in the clearance section!

Home Goods and Target’s clearance sections were my best friend while living in the apartment, I’ll admit that 75% of the time, I did not find much but man, those times where you find that ONE item you have been waiting to enter the clearance shelf…it’s the BEST! I used to work at Target and a lot of that time, I spent in the Home section so I figured out that twice a year, Target will clearance out a ton of home stuff! How to know when those times are coming up? Well that’s my next tip…

-Also with Target…download the app AND get the Red Card! You save 5% every time you use your Red Card and you get free shipping online. When you use the Target App, you will always know what deals are going on and what they have on Cartwheel. I LOVE when they do the “Spend blank and get blank off”, I usually take advantage of those when they have them for home or groceries.

2. Ask the employees what they know!

Always get in good with the employees! At Target and Victoria’s Secret, we always knew in advance what promotions were going to be happening and if we really liked a customer, we would let keep them in the loop! At our Home Goods, we found out when the best days to go shopping were and when they got their shipments.

3. Always stick to neutral colors!

This is something I have had to learn over the years and it’s really helped me! I know by now that I get tired of color REALLY quick. For example, I will see a blue rug and I will ADORE it…for a week. Then I want a new one! And we all know rugs are super expensive!

So I have learned, that ESPECIALLY for high price tagged items, stick to neutral colors. You will keep them longer and won’t get sick of them as quickly. If I do want to add some color into my room, I do it with little decorations that do not cost a lot like pillow cases, little plants, or even throws.

4. Shop Around for the Best Deal!

Don’t be quick to buy furniture without shopping around first. Before buying anything, I spend like a few days researching numerous store to see who has the best deal on what I am looking for.

5. Some Things Can Be Bought USED!

I’ll be honest, I am not a fan of buying used and I rarely do it but I think my issue is I am super picky and I don’t like DIY projects because THB I am too lazy for that! However, I know a lot of people enjoy doing that and I SO wish I did because I would love to buy used items and repaint them or vamp them up!

I always browse through Facebook Marketplace and I find so many cute bookshelves, chairs, and other furniture!

The important thing to remember is what is okay to buy used and what’s not. Anything like couches, beds, pillows or appliances, I personally would never buy used. But things like bookshelves, tables, and chairs are totally okay!

6. Three Letters…D I Y!

Okay, so like I said, I am not a big “DIY” Person and I think it’s because I do not have a creative mind what-so-ever! I wish so badly that I did but I am hoping that once we move into our house, I will be inspired to get more creative and try more DIY’s.

If you are in touch with your creative side, I highly suggest looking up DIY’s. I recently found this girl who is the QUEEN of DIY’s and her Instagram handle is @frillsanddrills or you can check out her blog by clicking here. It is AMAZING what she does and she walks you through how to do everything!

7. Take Advantage of Those Holiday Sales!

When Jaden and I moved into our apartment, it was the beginning of November which means that Black Friday was right around the corner. We got most of our furniture around that time because we wanted to be able to take advantage of the Black Friday deals!

This time around, we are moving at the end of September so we JUST missed Labor Day deals. Luckily, some of our appliances are being held for us so we can pay for them after we close, that way we can still take advantage of those Labor Day deals.

If you are moving in around holiday’s where stores run their best deals, I highly suggest waiting to take advantage of them so you can get some furniture for a good deal! Especially the bigger pieces like appliances and couches!

Well there you have it! My best tips for decorating on a budget! I looked through all of my pictures to find as many pictures as I could of our apartment but turns out I never took ANY! I posted a ton in my Instagram Stories but I never saved them so this one above is the ONLY one I could find. This was our living room!

Couch was from Living Spaces. The white pillows are from Home Goods. The light blue pillows are from Target. The coffee table is from IKEA. The candle is from Bath & Body Works. The little plant is from Home Goods. Finally, the gallery wall frames are from Target!
